IT Operations

IT operations is also a greatly important part of Fasthosts. It is part of the backbone that keeps the developed products running and helps stop everything go grinding to a halt.

The people who take on this role work in the NOC (Network Operations Centre), the role they take on is known as operations engineers. In the NOC they monitor different systems to make sure that they are working and if any break to identify which systems they are, alert people that the problem exists, then to fix the problem or escalate if need be.

A large amount of the work they receive is in the form of escalation tickets from other departments such as technical support. These can include things like requests to reset servers for migrations to be done overnight due to this causing a temporary outage it makes sense to do it at night where there is likely to be less people using the products.

When something is detected as not working it is put up onto the monitors where they are given 1 of multiple colors. The colors are green, yellow, amber, red and grey. Green means it has recently been fixed but is currently working fine. Yellow amber and red means something is not working properly increasing in severity the more red it gets with red being critical. Grey is used when something that is critical has not been fixed yet but has been escalated to another team to fix instead.
